In her "photo of the week" column for the weekly newspaper FAS, Katja Petrowskaja delves securely into 1 photograph, engaging with, say, a portrait of a miner in Donbas smoking a cigarette or an archival photo of a babushka suspended majestically in the air on a ski-elevator. Petrowskaja writes virtually what she sees and about what the images practise not testify, what remains hidden from the observer.

Ukrainian artist Mykola Ridnyi also explores that which is revealed and concealed in photography. For his work Blind Spot, he creates scotoma or blind spots on media images of the war in eastern Ukraine, questioning the construction of reality past the media and in propaganda photos. In his video screening at the exhibition MATERIAL NATION, Regular Places, he as well confronts the viewer with what is seen and what is not seen or is ignored: the collective deprival of contempo trauma.

In a conversation with creative person and announcer Saskia Reis, Petrowskaja and Ridnyi speak nearly their ain and others' bullheaded spots, virtually ignorance, mourning, and the draw of (incomplete) images.

Katja Petrowskaja was built-in in Kyiv and has lived in Berlin since 1999. An author and a journalist, she was awarded the Bachmann prize for her 2013 text Vielleicht Esther (Maybe Esther). In 2022, a choice of her FAS columns, Das Foto schaute mich an (The Photo Looks At Me) was published by Suhrkamp.

Mykola Ridnyi was built-in in Kharkiv and lives and works in Kyiv. Ridnyi is an creative person, filmmaker and curator. He works across media, from site-specific installations and sculptures to photography and experimental film.

Saskia Reis is a civilisation journalist and visual artist. She lives in Berlin and creates new narratives at the intersection of journalism and audio and visual storytelling. She writes for the daily newspapers Süddeutsche Zeitung and taz, the feminist journal Missy, among others.

In ihrer Kolumne Bild der Woche (FAS) begibt sich Katja Petrowskaja wöchentlich in einen intimen Austausch mit einem Bild – mit dem Portrait eines rauchenden Bergarbeiters im Donbass oder dem Archivfoto einer Babuschka, dice von einem Sessellift majestätisch in dice Wolken gehoben wird. Petrowskaja schreibt über das, was sie sieht und über jene Dinge, die von den Bildern verschwiegen werden – oder der Betrachterin verborgen bleiben.

Auch der ukrainische Künstler Mykola Ridnyi arbeitet mit dem Sichtbaren und dem Verborgenen in der Fotografie. In seiner Arbeit Blind Spots benutzt er Medienbilder aus dem Krieg in der Ostukraine und kreiert einen blinden Fleck im Bild, um die Realitätskonstruktionen durch Medien und Propaganda zu hinterfragen. Auch seine in der Ausstellung MATERIAL NATION gezeigte Videoarbeit Regular Places erzwingt eine Konfrontation dessen, was man sieht und nicht sieht oder nicht sehen will: das kollektive Leugnen noch frischer traumatischer Erinnerung.

Im Gespräch mit Künstlerin und Journalistin Saskia Reis sprechen Petrowskaja und Ridnyi über eigene und fremde blinde Flecken, über Ignoranz, Trauer und den Reiz des (unvollständigen) Bildes.

Katja Petrowskaja wurde in Kyiv geboren und lebt seit 1999 in Berlin. Für ihren Text Vielleicht Esther wurde dice Autorin und Journalistin 2013 mit dem Bachmannpreis ausgezeichnet. 2022 erschien eine Auswahl ihrer FAS-Kolumnen in Das Foto schaute mich an (Suhrkamp).

Mykola Ridnyi wurde in Charkiw geboren und lebt und arbeitet in Kyiv. Ridnyi ist Künstler, Filmemacher und Kurator. Er arbeitet medienübergreifend, von ortsspezifischen Installationen und Skulpturen bis hin zu Fotografie und Experimentalfilmen.

Moderation: Saskia Reis ist eine in Berlin lebende Kulturjournalistin und visuelle Künstlerin, die an der Schnittstelle von Journalismus, Audio und visuellem Storytelling neue Narrative schafft. Sie schreibt u.a. für dice Süddeutsche Zeitung, Missy und die taz.
