Hi

Not sure if this is the correct forum to post this.

I want to clean the carpet in my apartment (I am not moving out, just want to get it cleaned). The guys who the apartment hires are too pricey for me and they charge per room. The landlord gave me the ok to do it myself. I was going to rent a carpet cleaner from Lowes. Has anyone tried this? Do you recommend it?

More a housekeeping than a renting question but although I've never rented a machine from Lowe's I've rented similar from other places many times and they do a pretty good job. Not the super duper deep-clean job you'd get from a commercial cleaners but certainly good enough to spruce up wear and tear and remove most stains.

My LL asked me to clean to carpets before I moved awhile back. I used a regular steam cleaner and some cheap solution and the carpets looked pristine. The trick is to make sure you're using the machine correctly. It won't work on deep stains but they work just fine for regular cleaning. Oh, and I was refunded my whole security deposit so the LL must have been content with the job I did on the floors.

You can buy a carpet steam cleaner for about $150 - $200. Good investment. Or find a friend who has one.

To rent one is only around $25/day. Unless you own a home with a lot of carpeting and use something like that all the time it's really not worth the investment to purchase one. When you're in a rental who knows where you'll end up living next - maybe somewhere with hardwood floors and a few rugs.

Be careful not to leave the "heat" setting on too long. I've seen people burn their carpet before, and you can't clean a hole.

We just rented a rug doctor from Home Depot and it worked great. 100 times better than any retail steamer you can buy. It was only $25 plus a bottle of soap for $5.99. The only thing my PM warned me is make sure ask for the newest machine they have. The older ones can leak and it will smell moldy before it has a chance yo dry. Lowes and Home Depot are good about keeping the equipment in tip top shape. But grocery stores also rent them and they do not keep up on them as well.

I cleaned 1500 sq ft of carpet in 2 hours. If you have furniture it will take longer. It took a good 8 hours for everything to dry completely. My advantage was I was cleaning an empty house.

Actually, those 'retail steamers' kick Rug Doctor's ass..as well as Stanley Steamers. I have a Bissell steam cleaner and the biggest difference is the brush rollers.......it agitates the carpet and pulls up the dirt...it doesn't just force water into the carpet and then suck it up.

You also need to 'rinse' the carpets.....if you don't remove all the soap your carpets will be dirty again in a hot second.
